FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
“Monmouth Goes Pink”
Although the month of October has been declared as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, breast cancer awareness and recognition of survivors is year round. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2010, there will be 1,970 new breast cancer cases diagnosed in women in Mississippi. It is also estimated that 470 women will die from breast cancer in Magnolia State.
The good news is that there are 2.5 million Breast Cancer Survivors living in the United States!
To celebrate and honor breast cancer survivors in Mississippi, November 8-10, 2010, “Monmouth Goes Pink” and will present a series of enrichment programs to invited guest. Ms. Lani Riches, a two time breast cancer survivor and owner of Monmouth Plantation, with her husband Mr. Ronnie Riches, had a dream of using Monmouth Plantation to “help and bless other women going through this journey.”
As a result of her dream, funding secured from the Central MS Steel Magnolias Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and in partnership with the Mississippi Comprehensive Cancer Control Program, and the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program at the Mississippi State Department of Health breast cancer survivors have been selected to attend the Women of Monmouth Educational Seminar November 8-10, 2010.
Women breast cancer survivors in the Natchez area are invited to attend an educational session conducted by the Dr. Alice Chung, renowned breast cancer surgeon from the John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John’s Health Center, on Tuesday, November 9, at 1:30 pm-3:00 pm at Monmouth Plantation. Seating will be limited to thirty-five guests.
Alice Chung, M.D., is Assistant Director of the Breast Service and Assistant Director of the John Wayne Cancer Institute Breast Center. She is a Board-certified surgeon specializing in benign and malignant breast disease. Dr. Chung completed her breast fellowship training at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She has had numerous publications in scholarly journals and has presented papers at annual meetings of the American College of Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, and other renowned professional organizations.
The causes of breast cancer are not known. However, there are risk factors that increase some women chances for developing breast cancer. There are many unknowns about breast cancer, but what is known is that the best protection against this disease is early detection. KIND WORDS FROM WONDERFUL GUESTS
My family and I are still feeling the glow of wonderful Monmouth! We visited in June and it was extraordinary!Lani and Ron Riches have created not only a five star hotel (which is no easy feat on its own), but they have worked tirelessly to ensure that this house that belonged to General John A. Quitman, former governor of Mississippi, is also included on the prestigious National Register of Historic Places. If you are a history buff, you’re going to love this hotel with its attention to detail – portraits, letters, and antique artifacts. Had Quitman survived past 1858, there is evidence that his popularity and political acumen could have edged out Jefferson Davis as the first president of the Confederacy. You just breathe in the fragrance of the history here. And you can do so while sipping a freezing mint julep in a silver cup either in the secluded Quitman Study or in the company of the other friendly guests, eating from an inspired Southern menu that has caught the notice of the James Beard House in New York, strolling around the gardens and lake, and then sinking back into a plush pompom canopied bed at night with the softest of linens. (For those who need to stay plugged in, the WiFi worked flawlessly from the rocker on our porch.)The staff, some of whom have been working at Monmouth for over 20 years, are so very welcoming and accommodating. During the day, our boys, 11 year old twins, went fishing with the poles provided by the guide and caught a number of fine fish. In the evening, they dined on their own in the main-house parlor while we took our time with the full five course tasting meal in the dining room. Dinner was delicious with a choice of wines with each course: crisp hot rolls (as though they had been fried ever so delicately), a crayfish bisque, a baby spinach saladwith blue cheese, a little mango sorbet interlude, exquisitely cooked filet for my husband and cinnamon glazed duck breast for me, and to top it off - a chocolate mousse parfait.Breakfast kept us fueled with hearty eggs, perfect buttery biscuits, sausage, bacon, and grits that could make even a Yankee ask for seconds.Monmouth is a very special place and the Riches’s hospitality sees to it that every guest feels pampered, right down to the lovely talcum powder in a vintage pewter bottle in the bathroom. June is warm, but with Spanish moss dripping from the large trees and frogs croaking and crickets chirping, it was mesmerizing. Ladies, you could become “soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum,” but it is sixty years later and your hosts at Monmouth have the air-conditioning and iced tea just right.-Lexy Lovell and Michael UysBrooklyn, New York

QUITMAN FAMILY DESCENDANTS ADMIRE GIFT OF HIGH HONOR
What a great day we have had at Monmouth Plantation today. Lexy Lovell and her family from New York City are with us at Monmouth to explore her family roots. Lexy is a descendant of J. Antonia Quitman Lovell, one of the daughters of General John Anthony Quitman. John Anthony Quitman was one of the first owners of Monmouth Plantation. He went on to become Governor of Mississippi twice, a member of the U.S. Congress and instrumental in the Mexican American War. John A. Quitman received a sword from President Polk and Congress for his valor in the Mexican American War. Read more about its history and enjoy the pictures of Lexy and her family as they view this historical artifact while on vacation in Natchez, Mississippi.
On March 2, 1847, Quitman received one of only fourteen swords ever awarded by resolution of Congress, "in testimony of the high sense entertained by Congress of his gallantry and good conduct in storming Monterrey."

2010, at the historic James Beard House in New York City. Chef Varnedoe has prepared a five-course tasting
menu for the event in his signature “Upscale Down-South” culinary style. It is Chef Varnedoe’s first invitation
to man the famous kitchen in the house named for the late culinary master, James Beard. Considered one of
the most influential culinary lights in American history, Beard was crowned the “Dean of American Cookery” in
1954 by the New York Times and influenced countless chefs throughout his stellar career.
Chef Varnedoe’s Beard House debut commences on Wednesday, July 28 at 7 p.m. He will begin the
dinner with a trio of succulent hors d’ouevres, including Mini Crawfish and Smoked Gouda Grilled Cheese
Sandwiches, Rabbit, Foie Gras and Wild Mushroom Sliders, and Mini Oyster BLTs. The seated tasting menu will
be served at 8 p.m., and the dinner concludes at 10 p.m. with White Chocolate Bread Pudding with Bananas
Foster Whipped Praline Cream, Cinnamon Brown Butter Powder, Bruléed Bananas, Pecan Tuile, and Mint Gelee.
All proceeds from the event will directly fund The James Beard Foundation, a national not-forprofit
organization dedicated to furthering the practice, preservation, and appreciation of the culinary arts
in America. The Foundation’s outreach includes sponsorship of various programs, such as educational
workshops, culinary scholarships and seminars.
Chef Varnedoe considers this invitation a defining moment in his career. “It’s just such an enormous
honor to be invited. I’ll have the opportunity to cook on the same stoves as some of the finest chefs not only
in this country, but in the entire world,” he says. “To cook in that kitchen is every American chef’s dream, and
I’m humbled to be asked.”
Raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, it was Scott’s parents, both accomplished cooks, who first
introduced him to the kitchen arts. Among other influences, he lists his brother Todd, chef-owner of Le
Bouche Creole in Cornwall, England, and renowned Chef John Folse, who served as one of Scott’s first
professional mentors at White Oak Plantation in Baton Rouge.
As a competitive chef, Scott has won numerous awards, including Best of Show in 2008 and 2009
Acadiana Culinary Classic of Lafayette; 2008 Baton Rouge Culinary Classic (Bronze - Pork); 2008 and 2007
Natchez Food and Wine Festival Chef’s Showcase (1st Place and People’s Choice); and the 2007 Baton Rouge
Culinary Classic (Silver - Poultry, Soup, and Louisiana Nouvelle Bronze - Seafood). He has also been tapped by
Bon Appetit magazine as one of the top five chefs in New Orleans.
Since taking the helm of 1818 Restaurant at Monmouth Plantation in 2009, Scott has revamped the dinner
menu, added daily casual dining options, a weekly Plantation Sunday Brunch, and a seasonal Chef’s Table Menu.
”This is such an exciting opportunity for Monmouth as well as for Scott, and we are all so honored by
the invitation,” says Lani Riches, who co-owns Monmouth with her husband, Ronnie Riches.

ANOTHER SATISFIED CUSTOMER :)
Our Clients say the nicest things :) Please read the following sweet note sent to us by Carolyn Denman of Houston, TX. Thanks Carolyn and hurry back soon!
January 29, 2010
Dear Mrs. Riches,
I just returned to Houston from another glorious visit to Monmouth. The three friends who traveled with me loved every second of their trip and are already planning to return with their families.
Your staff is even better than the accommodations! Carol is so helpful and feels like an old friend. We were ready to adopt and kidnap Spencer and I loved seeing Hal again. Carlton and Martha took such good care of us as did Roosevelt. And that precious Mary makes the best grits Ive ever eaten! Melanie was a super guide.
Thank you for your commitment to our history and for sharing it with us! We’ll be back soon!
Sincerely,
Carolyn Denman
