Although the month of October has been declared as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, breast cancer awareness and recognition of survivors is year round. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2010, there will be 1,970 new breast cancer cases diagnosed in women in Mississippi. It is also estimated that 470 women will die from breast cancer in Magnolia State.

The good news is that there are 2.5 million Breast Cancer Survivors living in the United States!

To celebrate and honor breast cancer survivors in Mississippi, November 8-10, 2010, “Monmouth Goes Pink” and will present a series of enrichment programs to invited guest. Ms. Lani Riches, a two time breast cancer survivor and owner of Monmouth Plantation, with her husband Mr. Ronnie Riches, had a dream of using Monmouth Plantation to “help and bless other women going through this journey.”

As a result of her dream, funding secured from the Central MS Steel Magnolias Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and in partnership with the Mississippi Comprehensive Cancer Control Program, and the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program at the Mississippi State Department of Health breast cancer survivors have been selected to attend the Women of Monmouth Educational Seminar November 8-10, 2010.
